This past summer, BV ran a weeklong day camp for local children aged 8-10 called Passport Village. The mission of the camp was to educate young children about the world and to provide leadership opportunities for active teens in our chapter.
“I’ve never seen [my son] loving a camp like he did this week. It was amazing! Every morning he was actually looking forward to it.”
For our first-ever event of this kind, we were fortunate that Tower Hill School, based in Wilmington, Delaware, donated the site for the camp. Campers “traveled to” one of five world regions each day, and staff planned corresponding cultural activities. For example, on Tuesday, the kids learned about Latin America by engaging in a Dia de los Muertos activity, eating arroz con pollo brought in by a local Bolivian woman, and making maracas out of macaroni and paper plates.
Four BV JBers ran the camp; they were hired as Junior Counselors for the week. They spent many hours in the months leading up to the camp attending training and planning 20 activities for the kids. Many thanks to Isabel Shepherd, Bea Tenlen, Tucker Tyree, and Cindy Le for their enthusiasm and leadership.
The camp was a resounding success, for the campers as well as the counselors. We solicited feedback from parents, and were told:
- “[My daughter] had a wonderful time, and her only complaint was that the camp was only one week long!”
- “I’ve never seen [my son] loving a camp like he did this week. It was amazing! Every morning he was actually looking forward to it.”
- “The counselors did such a great job.”
Next summer, we plan to run another Passport Village, this time at Montgomery School in Chester Springs, PA.
